How? I forwarded it cos I thought it'd be a popular thread starter!

Yes, the Touch is very exciting and looks like it has the potential to be a
very cost-effective home automation interface. Very different from the
existing players, it has the same architecture as the current controller, a
Linux platform running on a pretty capable processor with lots of useful
resources and application software all written in Lua.

As far as xAP integration goes it throws everything to date out of the
picture. The only sensible architecture is to do a native implementation
that runs on the unit (in Lua and/or C) and doesn't need the server. We'd
been thinking about this before for the controller but because it's only
occasionally powered, the usefulness was limited.

7.4 has hit me a little hard - the move to Perl 5.10 is big but also the
fact that the work that had been committed to the 7.4 beta repository by
the
official development team turned out to be a bit of a sham; most of the
changes had been going on in secret ahead of the product announcements of
the Radio and the Touch. Then suddenly there were a whole bunch of
submissions. They even switched databases, mysql -> sqlite back to mysql
half way through. SQLLite been pushed back to 8.0 now and that's the
version
that the Touch will require as it runs its own lite version of SqueezeBox
Server so can actually serve content to other clients (from an attached
drive or memory card).

Not sure how this message ended up in this thread!

Anyway will the xAP plugin be extended to cover the new Squeezebox Touch?
Potentially that offers a massive opportunity for a relativly cheap touch
interface but I'm not sure how much is exposed.
