Tools to update web sites

I don't know if I'm going about this the wrong way but having got a
bit fed up with editing batch files to copy various files around the
place in order to create new downloadable 'packages' from my xAP site,
I've just spent the last 2 evenings writing a new application that
does it all for me.

I setup a 'job description' which tells it what files are required for
a particular package, and various little tables in the app tell it
where to put them.

It manages cleaning out old rubbish, creating directories, unsetting
R/O attributes, copying documentation, licences and schema
descriptions.

Tonight I'll get it to ZIP everything up and FTP it directly to my web
site. Then I'll have to see if there's a way I can negotiate
programatically with PHPNuke (the portal system I use for my site) so
that I can update each of the downloadables (version number, file
size, file location).

Hopefully it'll make life easier a little easier, especially as the
number and variety of these files increases. How do you guys do it?
