Just another thought - can you not trigger your hb's based on some incoming
event ?? Perhaps declare a heartbeat interval of say 3 mins but trigger it
based on an incoming heartbeat from another device with more frequent ones

the hub for example every minute ??
Not sure quite what the fork issue is.
