I don't think that's right! (Or perhaps I've misunderstood what you are
saying?)
A.b.c.> will not match a.b.c
A.b.c.> will match a.b.c.d
Whereas I read "including nothing being present" to mean
A.b.c.> would match a.b.c as well as a.b.c.d
