Using Globals in determinators

I am trying to include some of the global strings in my determinators.

For example the global may be:
controllight=A1

I want to then send an x10.basic message with the following:
command=bright
device="glabal=controllight"
level=30

Obviously the "global=controllight" wont work, but what can I put
there?

Background:
I want to be able to control my x10 kit using a IR remote control. I
have slimserver setup to send the IR information via xpl.
If I press '1' then controllight variable will be changed to A1
If I press '2' then controllight variable will be changed to A2...etc
(an OSD message is also sent to my squeezebox telling me which light I
will be currently controling).

Then when I press 'up' the light I have selected will be the one which
becomes brighter.

I know I could do this by having a determinator for each light which
only works if the globalvariable is set to control its light. But that
will be alot of hard work, and a load more determinators to write (and
edit when I improve them)
