Kenneth,
Bad news - on the 1592, the BIOS management program is supplied on disk,
rather than in the firmware. From new, the laptop would have come with a
separate partition showing the BIOS manager, and you would have had the
option as running it as part of the DISK boot sequence rather than the
POST.
If you have the original disk, you will need to boot from that partition
first to make your BIOS changes to see the new HDD. It _may_ be possible to
boot from a Linux bootdisk and get the files off, but it's NOT a DOS
partition, so you can't simply COPY from a DOS boot ;-(
Alternatively, you may need to find the original Compaq CD-ROM, and (if you
can't boot from it), boot from a DOS floppy with CD-ROM drivers, and run
SmartStart that way ;-(
Real pig - no idea why Compaq did it that way.
