Hi Graham,

If it doesn't have a digital input it sounds like the amp is a pro-logic
rather than digital unit. There was a time period before digital amps
arrived when manufacturers where providing inputs that would allow a digital
upgrade without actually having the processing in the amp.

To upgrade these amps to digital requires a DVD player with processing on
board which would have 6 outputs (5.1 if you like) that would simply connect
into the 5.1 inputs on the amp - job done.

However, it sounds as though neither the amp nor the DVD player has the
processing in.

The choices therefore are as follows;
a) stick with the current equipment and just make a stereo audio connection
>from No cost but not getting digital surround from DVD.
b) replace the amp for one with digital processing on board. Cost ?200-300
plus, will give digital surround from DVD but still only pro-logic from
other sources eg terrestrial TV, Sky, Cable, VCR, (as per DVD upgrade
below - but this route will potentially make it easier to add other digital
sources at a later date [SkyPlus etc]. will require an optical or coaxial
cable to connect).
c) replace the DVD player for one with digital processing on board. Cost
?150 plus, as above will give digital surround from DVD only. Will require 6
single phono leads to connect to existing amp.
d) add an outboard decoder which would sit between the DVD and the amp.
probably neither  acost effective nor convenient route unless you happen to
have one lying around (unlikely to say the least).

Hope this makes sense - if not get back to me.

regards

I need some help connecting a friend's DVD player and HomeCinema amp.
On the back on the DVD player it has Optical and Coax 5.1ch Outputs, however
on the back on the HomeCinema Amp, it only has 6 phono sockets for 5.1ch
(ie. Front/Rear (L&R), Centre and SubWoofer).

My question is: Does a cable exist to connect the two, ie. Coax -> 6 phono.

Cheers
Graham
