I have just been looking at PC PSU's (Ken is making me do it) as I have
an Althlon machine built into an old mini tower case which has a fairly
small PSU - certainly not Athlon or P4 approved!
Anyway, I assume the PSU is a tad underrated as sometimes when powering
up the Athlon machine the thing doesn't reach post and hangs but in my
other case with my other PSU works perfectly every time. OK ... So the
solution is a replacement PSU and I thought I'd look at chucking a
meaty
one into the server and moving the current server one over to the
Athlon.
Looking around for meaty PSUs to power the server I see that Enermax do
a 550w unit which has the following ratings:
DC O/P Output current rating
Voltage MIN / MAX
3.3V
0A / 40A
+5V
11A / 46A
+12V
4A / 24A
-5V
0A / 1A
-12V
0A / 1A
+5Vsb
0A / 1.8A
3.3V & +5V 300W

Do modern mobo's *REALLY* pull up to 40A at 3.3v?
I want a meaty PSU to enable me to power more drives reliably but are
these 3.3v ratings just unrealistic in respect of the requirements of a
modern PC? I mean the 3.3 and 5v rails make up most of the rating of
the
PSU but surely hard drives and CD Writers drain large 12v loads too?
Does anyone really know what current drains at each voltage PCs draw
these days?
