I'd mount it flat if I were you.  One thing to bear in mind though is heat
dissipation.  The desktop case was designed to be used flat, not on its
side, so you may wish to drill some holes in the top for hot air to escape.
Of course if it's an old 486, there isn't much heat to dissipate!
