I agree with all you say, apart from:

A cynic might argue that the true arist just wants to express him/herself,
not make a pile of cash :-)

IMHO a true artist wants to make enough money from their music so that they
can continue making music as a career.

If they could do that without record companies, they would do. There are a
few people who have had success this way (David Gray for one).

All I want is to get the band to that stage, then I'll be happy.
