Handbrake encoding times

Hi all,
How long should it take Handbrake to convert a VOB file to an MP4 ? (with
iPhone/iPod Touch preset)
I was expecting in the region of 30-40 minutes, maybe an hour tops, but
current predictions are for over 5 hours to convert a 3.7GB DVD-quality
file.
I know my hardware is not the latest, but it's not *that* old either (or so
I thought...), i.e. 1.7 Ghz pentium M, 2GB ram, loads of spare disk space,
WinXP.
*Hours* per episode / film is not going to work, is there an alternative
converter that can run a bit (lot!) quicker?
