Sorry, got to respond.

1) So yep, it wouldn't run over a piece of wet string. So what happens
when ADSL stops working ? A telnet link over ADSL, or 2K4 modem is about
the same, you can certainly use telnet over 2K4, something tells me VPN
would struggle.

2) Oh things have moved on, thats why I don't use windows. Show me a
windows box that can beat this :-

  8:38am  up 426 days, 20:07,  6 users,  load average: 0.02, 0.01, 0.00

Oh, and thats a desktop machine, running gnome, a grahpical desktop that
by far outperforms windoze IMHO.

Just becasue the vast majority do it dosn't mean it's right.

Theres more of it about than you think, oh, and theres not just Linux,
don't forget the ~4 flavours of Unix.
