Currys, picked up a box, plugged it in and presto.it works virtually
flawlessly!

I'm gonna let the issue with adsl go as you said virtually :)

>Since many people have trouble operating a PC let alone building one I<= BR> cannot see SS going anywhere fast on a commercial basis other than into a specialised PC market (for now) and the whole point of >this, for me any= way
when it comes to HA in general, is that if it cannot be operated by the
un-initiated inside five minutes then it amounts to a useless pile of techn= o
junk unless I need it for a specific >purpose. SS is not as easy to use = and
intuitive as the TiVo interface and I would bet that Replay is along much the same lines as they have to design it so non-technical people can operat= e
it without >intimidating them.

Yeah, it's not for everyone yet. Its a pc thing. The interface is a little<= BR> clunky, and not very pretty. Good points. Is it the best PVR for EVERYBODY.=
hmm, no, I suppose my mum wouldn't be able to set it up..

>As for writing apps to take out advertising I cannot program, I would l= ike
to learn, but for the foreseeable future have neither the time not the
inclination to do so, it would be nice, but not exactly a major >stickin= g
point IMO. After all, remember VHS?

Um, once it's working a little better, I'll bung the program on the web
(Don't hold your breath for it, it might be a while). You won't have to
write it.  I think I might put in a option whereby you have to registe= r by
sending me a email headed 'Showshifter is a more powerful, more versitile and expandable system than a simple one trick pony like TIVO' in the
subject.. ;)

>Each and every system has its pros and cons, it's whether you can live = with
them or not that seems to be the question.

Yeah, Showshifters con's are... The interface is obtrusive and not very
pretty. It needs setting up. It needs a pc.

The pro's are.. no subscription of any kind. More expandable more flexible<= BR> more powerful.

Tivo achieves what it sets out to do, but my point is, its possible to have=
one box do much more than this, with less effort and warranty braking. Just=
look at the moxi stuff from a while back. That's what I expect from a box now, not just single function.

When Tivo's first hit =A3199 I thought real hard about it, and had a real g= o
at Showshifter. One clean install later I got Showshifter rock solid on XP<= BR> and never looked back.

Good point about the average punter though.. Got me on that one fair and square.
