RE: Lossless Compression Help!
Title: RE: [ukha_d] Lossless Compression
Help!
Ah I
see,
My
undserstanding of lossless capture WTR video is as Jason described - ie
the2
1Mb/sec humungous feeds with no loss of quality.
I
thought that ppl were getting confused between loss of quality and
reduction in
file size.
Tony
Tony,
Everyone understands this.
The confusion comes because someone (Jason?) said that they
_captured_ losslesly...
... when it was asked how (ie - did they have a decoder with a digital
out), this got modified to "No - I capture in analogue, and use lossless
compression of that".)
Then the shouting began.

Pkzip etc use
compression where, yes, data is removed - otherwise it would not be
compressed!! BUT at decompression, that data is recovered to create an
exact copy of the original. With Jpeg/mpeg2 etc, data is removed that
CANNOT be recreated - is this why there appears to be some
confusion? BOTH methods do lose data when the file is compreseed, but
one
of them can recover that
data.
