risk
I see is in persuading the bar code scanner to do what we want. The PDFs I
posted a day or so ago provide a detailed programming manual for the
scanner
so you can configure it. I didn't look too deeply at what you can do, but I
see:

risk 1: the scanner is configured such that it doesn't present information
in a useable format on the RS232 port (remember, there are two interfaces
on
the scanner)

risk 2: the model number seems a bit strange, so the programming guide
might
be the wrong one, meaning we have difficulty in re-programming the scanner
to transmit bar code information to the serial port.

I think it might be worth a mail to the supplier if nothing else. If
someone
can point out where I can get my hands on a conveniently packaged level
converter, then I will gladly test the (presumed dead) scanner I have sat
on
my desk.
