Re: Serial LCD/VFD displays
Mounted the VFD in a double wall box this afternoon, faced off with
some green coloured perspex from Rapid. Only mod required was to
carefully bend serial interface pins to allow connection at 90
degrees instead of straight back (the display board doesn't fit
otherwise). I have a fairly long run from node0 to where the display
sits, and VFDs are very sensitive to voltage drop -- the controller
wouldn't tolerate a 0.6v drop and I've had to install a local power
supply nearby to power it. The display does, I have to say, look damn
good -- even if VFDs themselves tend to look a bit dated.
Less success with the Crystalfontz LCD. The supplied bezel, which I
had hoped I could cut down, is fractionally too wide (less than a mm)
to fit into the back box. The acrylic sheet works quite well when the
display is back lit, so I'll get some more, perhaps in a more neutral
colour, and make my own bezel.
