I use a desktop firewall 'Zone Alarm' to do this at work. However due
to
the way I collect mail this may not work for you.
1) My corporate MS Exchange server receives/sends mail
2) I use Outlook 2000, to connect to the Exchange server and show the
contents of my inbox etc on the Exchange Box
3) Zone Alarm is configured on my PC to not allow Outlook.exe make
outgoing
connections to the internet. So any mail I view that has references
to
external content, like images, will be blocked. Outlook.exe may only
talk
to the exchange server.
If you use outlooks 'internet email provider' to download mail, this
would
require external access to the internet. You could probably configure
a
desktop firewall to only allow external connections to your ISPs mail
server
and nothing else for Outlook.exe.
Myself I prefer good old plain text, but these days it seems everyone
is
obsessed in sending a whole web page via mail rather than just a link to
the
relevant site. Dell adverts are generally several big images all
joined
together, and are meaningless when blocked by my firewall.
