RE: Barcode DataBase
I have also been looking into this but haven't had too much time
recently, here's my thoughts.
To make it really useful I would like the scanner to add items to my
online shopping basket (swmbo's current favorite.sainsburys), however
they don't seem to use the bar code as the product code, so you need to
maintain a list of bar codes-> product codes translations, as well
as
any other description data. This I assume is also shop specific, ie
asda
don't have the same product codes as tesco etc. I also assume that they
don't give this info out, but I haven't checked the itemised bill to
see
if they appear.
Once you have the product code, it should be fairly easy to write a
script that retrieves the login webpage, fills out the details, and
adds
the item to the list, logging out after a fixed timeout. This looks to
be possible with the sainburys site. Of course this is always dependant
on the online shopping webpage not changing too much. If the item is
not
found then a separate list of missing items/descriptions etc would have
to be created, so that these can be added manually to the shopping and
entered into the database for future use.
Has anyone else looked into the online shopping websites and how they
can be interfaced to bar code readers?
