with information then even better.

Agreed, it's a question of agreeing a format, my initial thoughts being
CSV, although XML would provide more flexibility.

I propose that we use a realational DB, and store the following
information

Barcode Data

      Barcode
      Type
      Manufacturer
      Item
      Size
      Notes

Manufacturer Data

      Manufacturer ID 
      UPC Identifier
      Name
      Notes

Nutritional Info

      ????
