John,
Not sure what's going wrong on your site, but you are welcome to have a
look
at the code on our rocketry club website for it's drop down menu's
http://www.ears.org.uk/ if you like.

It uses Javascript for the menuing, view the source and search for
"Init",
"showLayer", "hideLayer" and "hideAll"

Might give you the hint you need about the differences between
"Mozilla" and
"IE"
