Slingbox and controlling a DVR

My friend and I were chatting last night (he lives in Canada) and
misses UK TV.

We were discussing installing a Slingbox in my house along with a DVR
which can be controlled over the internet and record shows he wants to
see - then he can stream it to himself via Slingbox.

Is the quality of Slingbox any good? I have a 20mb Virgin line so I am
assuming this will be enough bandwidth?

Does the Virgin V+ box allow for remote controlling over the internet?
Or do I need to look at getting a different DVR?

At the moment I have nothing and I cannot get Sky as I live in a flat
that does not allow dishes!
