RE: HD Video Editing

Hi Stuart,

I run a video production company so know a bit ;) We use Adobe Master
Suite=
CS5 mostly and some of our editors use Final Cut.

What specifically did you want to know?

HD editing is pretty taxing on the CPU and memory - especially consumer
cod=
ec video like AVCHD. It really depends what software (and plugins etc) and
=
what kind of editing you're doing (most importantly) and how fast you
expec=
t it to respond or playback smoothly.

My latest edit PC is a bit of a monster (i7 975x with 34Gb ram and raid
arr=
ays etc) but even that has it's moments! Trouble is, the faster the PC,
the=
more you tend to ask of it with multiple renders running in the background=
and editing at the same time!

Paul.

Geoff,

Thanks for your response to my question.

I suppose I might need to move to either an Intel i5 or i7 processor since
=
I'll be editing HD footage.

Anybody else out there got any experience of editing HD video?

I have just undertaken a similar exercise. I went for an Intel i3 530
proce=
ssor (=A376), a Gigabyte GA-H55-UD3H motherboard (=A388) and 4Gb DDR3 RAM
(=
=A365). Funds were limited for this upgrade, hence the choice of an
i3 instead of an i5 (which was double the price) and also for choosing the
=
integrated video instead of an external graphics card.

I can't comment on it's HD video editing capabilities as I haven't done
any=
yet, but in normal use the CPU load is tiny and the core temperatures stay=
around 22 deg C. Ripping DVDs and transcoding them, the core temperature r=
ockets up to 36 deg C and processor usage is around 40% ish.

Having transferred from a 3Ghz single core Celeron, my new setup, whilst
mo=
dest compared to some systems, seems so much quicker.

that will give reasonable performance. As always, cost is an issue.
