Hmmm, feet first does not do it justice. More like a belly flop from fifty
feet.
You have outlined a spare time project that would take most people new to
the topic a year or more.
I guess if I was doing this from scratch I would start by getting it
working
on serial and then going forward. I have not used Rabbit myself but Atmel
AVR kit. Whatever you end up using though it costs quite a bit to get going
with the hardware and software development environment. After playing for a
while you will get to the point where you need PCB's made. This is a topic
all on its own if working at home otherwise the likes of PCB-Pool are a
good
choice. Finally, Ethernet can be added afterwards as a module or built into
the hardware. The embedded software is not too hard using something like C
so only a compiler to get hold off................
So, in summary. Depending on where you are starting from an embedded
solution is quite a task. Rabbit would be a good choice of hardware but
setup costs could be several hundred pounds. Fine if you carry on but it
you
hate it not so good.
The PC solution should be quite easy as long as you can figure out the data
from the unit.
