Yes,

most (with the exception of bga's etc) smt rework can be carried out with a bit of skill and 'normal' low wattage irons - training is essential though, as the lands are typically very small and therefore very easily damaged by heat and very little force. It is an art, I'm always amazed at how swmbo does some of the stuff.  She's just done some work for Ian Bird for the IRDA project, If it's not to much she may well be convinced again.  Let me know.

Does anyone have experience of SMT ? Is it possible to solder SMT
resistors and capacitors without SMT kiet, ie can I do it with a low
wattage solering iron, tweezrs and a magnifying glass ?
