Yes, the "modem" signal is simply a spare channle slot which is configured differently. I think the max speed is 30MB bandwidth they can fit down one channel. but you are throttled down becuase this bandwidth is shared between other users.

It is plugged directly into the wall box, they put in two point the other one does the TV box which works OK.
 
The problem with the Cable Modem is the LED for the cable connection not coming on when it boots up, I reckon the guys who installed didn't check the port was live before they left.
 
Would it do any harm to connect it to the TV port which does work or is this a separate channel to the modem?
